Let’s face it. The fish oil omega 3 benefits are numerous and the list of them just keeps getting longer. Researchers never seem to tire of investigating the benefits. The affects on cholesterol levels and blood triglycerides is one of the more interesting areas of study.

It’s interesting because fish oils or fats contain cholesterol. They are triglycerides. Yet when the supplements are taken orally, they reduce blood triglycerides and balance cholesterol levels.

In the past, the best advice for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides was to reduce the intake of foods containing them. That meant lowering your intake of dietary fats. Now, it seems that not all fats are a problem.

The worst fats, according to researchers, are trans-fatty acids. They are man-made, created by hydrogenating or partially hydrogenating vegetable oils. It seems that the body lacks the enzymes necessary to efficiently metabolize trans-fats, so they spend too much time in the bloodstream. The more time they spend in the blood, the more likely they are to become oxidized and clog the arteries.

Saturated fats are a bad choice, too. Polyunsaturated fats are a better choice and essential in the human diet, but too many omega-6 polyunsaturated fats can lead to chronic inflammation. One of the benefits of fish oil omega 3 fats is to counteract that inflammation.

High blood triglycerides and imbalanced cholesterol levels are a risk factor for heart disease. Chronic inflammation plays a role in heart disease and in cancer. Cancer and heart disease are today’s two biggest killers.

Inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel, are benefitted from the anti-inflammatory activity of fish oil omega 3 fats. But, some of the supplements on the market have more anti-inflammatory activity than others.

It seems that there is something in the natural triglycerides that contribute to the anti-inflammatory activity. It is not just the omega-3 content. If it were, the ones with the highest concentration of omega-3s would have the highest amount of anti-inflammatory activity. New research has shown that the natural triglycerides have more anti-inflammatory activity, even though the concentration of omega-3s is lower.

So, we keep learning new things, but we cannot forget the things that we already knew. For example, the mercury and contaminant content of the natural triglycerides could be higher than what is found in the concentrated supplements, because the concentration process is also a distillation process. It removes heavy metals and other contaminants.

So, if you want natural fish oil omega 3 supplements, you need to be sure that the manufacturer tests them for contaminants, of all kinds. They should also be tested for oxidation.

Recently, a friend complained about the taste and smell of her supplement. On a visit to her home, I took a whiff of the bottle and told her to throw it away. The bad smell and taste is due to high levels of oxidation, which means the oils were spoiled, before they were encapsulated.

In conclusion, there are other things to consider when buying fish oil omega 3 supplements. Take your time and do the research. It’s the only way to be safe.
